Meet the Artist: Dorothy Forbes

Join us for a special morning as we celebrate the artistic journey of resident Dorothy Forbes, a distinguished artist whose work has been deeply influenced by botanical imagery. Dorothy’s incredible career spans decades, with her pieces showcased in significant exhibitions, including a 2010 exhibition at the prestigious Umbrella Contemporary Art Gallery in Townsville.

A Life Dedicated to Art

Dorothy grew up in Brisbane, where she developed an early passion for music and drawing. Her pursuit of the arts led her to earn a Degree in Art History, paving the way for a remarkable career in both creating and curating art. She was the Director of the Bakehouse Art Gallery and Forbes Gallery in Mackay, where she exhibited works from Australian Modernists.

Recognised Talent

As an artist, Dorothy’s work has been collected by the Townsville, Mackay and Rockhampton Regional Art Galleries. She has received numerous accolades for her drawing, including the prestigious Perc Tucker Art Prize and was selected for the Queensland Art Gallery drawing prize.

Dorothy has always valued curiosity and creativity. Her botanical-themed artworks reflect a deep appreciation for nature’s intricate beauty, inspired by the epiphany of discovery and the wonders of botanical exploration. Her paintings pulsate with life and movement, capturing the essence of the natural world in vibrant, expressive detail.
